Silvi Alcivar Poet!
is always in pursuit of wild parrots
Neighborhood: The Mission
Gig: Poet/Owner of The Poetry Store
What are you up to these days? I just finished putting together two poetry manuscripts (let the rejections begin!). And I’m always trying to figure out how to get back to Kauai (sigh).
Where do you get your local gossip? Mission Local, not gossip so much as neighborhood reporting (dear violence, why you gotta be in my neighborhood and make me call the cops so much?)
Who's your favorite quintessential local character? Jack Hirschman. Just hear him read or watch him host an event. So charmingly poetic!
Where's your go-to date place? All you can eat Indian buffet on Fillmore, then a movie at Kabuki. Full belly + film + my honey = a great night.
Why do you love your neighborhood? Because one night, while walking home, I discovered a shelf mounted in a bush with a beautiful sign that said “free shelf.” And on this shelf, free for the taking, was The Indian in The Cupboard, a book I hadn’t seen or thought about since 4th grade. Just. Magical.
What's your favorite SF institution? The Institute on Aging, especially all the students in my poetry classes who are brilliant, imaginative, willing to learn new things, and hilarious. (Here’s a slideshow.)
What do you get obsessive about here in SF? Sean Hayes. Touching dead jellyfish with my feet late night on Ocean Beach. Atlas Cafe’s golden beetloaf sandwich. Biking. Running. Listening for the foghorn from my house. Pomegranates. Harbor seals. Wind.
