Jacob Guillermo Pena DJ/Promoter
is all about the cheeks!
Neighborhood: The Tenderloin
Gig: Sweater Funk, Gostosa!, Haight & Soul, Feeling Good, Spill The Wine, etc.
What event will we find you at this week? Lots of stuff this week: 7/21 Guillermo with Myron & E (live band) at John Colins, 7/22 Haight & Soul happy hour with Guillermo, Vinyl Richie, & guest DJ Lucy at Milk Bar, 7/23 Guillermo & Renmin at SEE Eyewear, and 7/24 Sweater Funk at Li Po Lounge.
Who's your favorite quintessential local character? Toph One. SF DJ, artist, writer, cyclist. Can be seen pedaling down Valencia, shouting expletives at cars with a bag of records strapped to his back on the way to blow some minds at the next gig. Someone needs to write a book about this guy!
Why do you love your neighborhood? The reputation of the TL keeps the faint of heart out of my way, it makes the great places we have here even more enjoyable, and there's a lot to enjoy!
What's your secret spot in town? Not so secret because it's in plain sight, but some folks are still surprised when I tell them there's a taco cart out side of La Oaxaqueña most nights. Ask for cheek or barbacoa instead of the same ol' carne asada. Order four of em.
What's your favorite San Francisco institution? Dick Vivian at Rooky Ricardo's. Watch him put a box of 45s into a newbie's hands and patiently explain to him how to go about digging for records. It's not something you see these days at record shops. Most folks ignore you. Dick will chat you up and send you home happy and wanting more. Again, someone should write a book about this guy!
If you can change one thing about San Francisco, what would it be? SF needs Jamaican food!
