From Unspeakable Projects: "One venerable arts institution organized its recent programming around the concept of Bridging the Gap--a notion that conceives of art as social problem-solving and of the artist as progressive civic savior. Amen to that. But what happens if instead of bridging the gap we flip the bird? Is there a productive trouble-making in picking a fight? Whose side are you on, anyway? THIS MEANS WAR explores the spirit of confrontation in the work of five emerging artists across a range of media. Works by Hannah Ireland, Justin Limoges, Matt Momchilov, AMTK, Steffani Jemison.
Hanna Ireland’s site-specific installation explores the act of claiming physical and visual space—and what happens when we vie for the same contested ground. Justin Limoges’ ink drawings and linocuts represent objects, if not at outright war, then held in precarious détentes. Filled with tipping points, standoffs and dubious instructions—like how to kill your nemesis— the works on paper teeter between humor and open aggression. Matt Momchilov documents contemporary subcultures, from urban warehouse parties to fetish conventions, and their exuberant and sometimes violent ends. Rendered in a photo-realistic style that evokes tabloid snapshots, his series of oil paintings celebrates spontaneous moments of bad behavior. AMTK are a collaborative duo creating large-format paintings in a process that’s equal parts diplomacy and sabotage. Overwriting traditional portraiture with tribal motifs and alien figures, they produce dense vistas of subjects aiming cool judgement at the viewer. Steffani Jemison’s found-image installation pits pop culture against high art in a diptych of near life-sized light boxes. A call to arms and also to the party."

San Francisco design store and gallery RARE DEVICE is proud to present: Spin - A New Twist on Vintage Board Games: Work by Jennifer Judd-McGee and Mati McDonough. The work will occupy the Rare Device gallery through September 28, 2010. A reception for the show will be held Thursday, September 2, 2010 from 7 - 9pm.
Artists JENNIFER JUDD-McGEE and MATI McDONOUGH share a love of pattern, palette and play in their work. Their work for SPIN is inspired by a mutual admiration for the bold, graphic punch of vintage board games. Jennifer and Mati have incorporated elements like winding pathways, typography, colors, characters and textures of old games, and have respun them in a thoroughly modern fashion.
Jennifer Judd-McGee is a mixed media artist and illustrator living and working in Maine. Much of her inspiration comes from her coastal Maine surroundings and the patterns and forms she sees in nature. She has shown her work in galleries across the US and in England and Canada, and her work has been featured in several books, including Old School, Jen-11, and The Handmade Marketplace. She is a regular illustrator for Maine Magazine, and has done design work for companies including Target, I-Pop, The Art Group and Modern Twist.
Mati McDonough was born and raised on the southern tip of Maine where she became well versed in real and imagined board games. For the past 10 years Mati has lived and gleaned color combinations from her art studio in the Mission and calls San Francisco her home. Mati attended CCA for painting and illustration and is represented by Lilla Rogers Studio.

RARE DEVICE is proud to present REACTION, new work by Massachusetts-based design firm NERVOUS SYSTEM. The show runs September 2 through October 10 in the Rare Device project space; a reception for the artists will be held September 2 from 7-9pm (in conjunction with SPIN: A NEW TWIST ON BOARD GAMES).
The work in Reaction is based on a chemical patterning system called reaction diffusion, which describes a hypothesized mechanism for the synthesis of the diverse patterning seen on animals ranging from zebra stripes and giraffe spots to the complex coloring of tropical fish. The line features slip-cast ceramic housewares as well as pieces created using novel 3D printing techniques currently under development. These works will be accompanied by other Nervous System designs in jewelry and housewares as well as video and interactive applications where participants can play with these systems and even create their own designs. More than simply a display of their end product, this exhibition is about process from conception to program to design to production, showcasing Nervous System’s unique blend of art, science, and craft; the work spans art, products, and interactive media – mixing gallery, store, and playground.
Nervous System was founded in 2007 by Jesse Louis-Rosenberg and Jessica Rosenkrantz. Their designs exist at the intersection of science, art, and technology. They create using a novel process that employs computer simulation to generate designs and digital fabrication to realize products. Drawing inspiration from natural phenomena and processes, they write computer programs mimicking patterns found in nature and use those patterns to create unique and affordable pieces of art. Their first line was based on a model of coral formation called diffusion-limited aggregation. “Our work is rooted in an interest in understanding the way the world works, both the morphogenetic processes of nature and the industrial process of man,” says Louis-Rosenberg.
Working in a variety of materials from recycled stainless steel to nylon, Nervous System uses rapid prototyping manufacturing methods such as 3D-printing, acid etching and water jet cutting to enable small runs and even unique pieces to be sold affordably, keeping their innovative art accessible. In keeping with an ethic of accessibility, all of their design algorithms are open-source and some can be used on their website to create consumer-generated designs.
